Today, the question "Why create your alumni network? On the occasion of the AlumnForce Meetings, more than 40 representatives of our partner networks were gathered, and had to answer one question:
"How can I add value to my network and make it attractive to my members?"

From these exchanges came out 10 fundamental ideas to keep in mind to manage, on a daily basis, its alumni platform. Here are the first 3!

  1. You will gather all the generations
  2. Your members will be the focus of your attention
  3. You will enrich every member of your community

Bring your students and alumni together in your network

The main role of an alumni network is to gather, federate around a common experience. And while it used to be the case that only graduates and alumni were included, it is now the norm to include students.
Allow your members to create a bond from the moment they join your organization. This bond will be deeply reinforced! It's also a strength that your students will be able to draw on throughout their education. And you'll ensure that you keep 100% of your members active as they transition from student to recent graduate 👌
To go further, we have written an article dedicated to the 4 advantages of an alumni network that includes students.

Know your community's needs

A network must be at the service of its members. And each network can have its specificity. It can be career development, continuing education, business opportunity generation, mutual support through mentoring...
The most important thing is to know the needs of your community in order to ensure that your members are personally involved. To do this, nothing could be easier: ask them! Conduct regular satisfaction surveys to find out which services are used the most, which ones should be put aside, and which ones should be created to meet new needs. The most recent example being of course the explosion of virtual events.

Give your members the opportunity to help each other

Enriching your members does not mean that you have to do everything by yourself. This is not the purpose of an alumni network. The strength of your network comes from your members, their involvement and the interactions they create with your community.
To enrich your members, give them the means to help each other! Create services or spaces dedicated to exchanges and sharing. For example, a monthly afterwork that will become an expected meeting. Or a mentoring program that not only connects your members, but also allows them to bring value to each other, and thus generate interest for the network as a whole.

These commandments may seem simple, and they are. But be sure to include what is essential, and what we sometimes tend to forget! Focus on the essentials: create links, value and exchanges. These are the essential ingredients for an active alumni network that develops over time.

And for the next part, it's this way 👇

Part 2: Get into the heart of your community.
Part 3: How to put people at the center of your actions!
